Can we just for a moment actually look at this from an art/animating view?
I like this gif.  I really do.  I find Jack attractive, and it’s not just because I like teenage boys with white/silvery hair.  But as I’ve been looking at it I’ve been noticing all these little things that make CGI movies so realistic in a way, nowadays.
The strings on his hoodie.  As he turns, they move the way you’d expect them to, they look like they have the right weight or something. They fall the right way.  Someone watched people turning around in hoodies and made sure this was right.  A+ on the physics engine and the lighting system in this movie.
At the ‘end’ of the loop watch his chest.  He’s breathing.  ”Of course he’s breathing,” you might say.  But he’s breathing.  His chest is expanding, like a real chest, not just from sighing or anything, but from just standing there and being a human.  You don’t even notice it, like you don’t really notice the breathing of yourself, or your friends, or your family, or anyone else.  It’s one of those things that brings subtle life to things and I’m just completely taken over it.
His ear.  ”But Melissa,” you say again, “It’s a fucking ear.”  Yes.  Yes it is.  It is a stylized ear, but look at the lighting.  It looks like it’s glowing red dully, and that’s not because he’s frosty and people get red on their ears when they’re cold.  It’s because light is going through his ear, and showing the blood in it, and so it looks red.  You never really think about it, but ears are pretty thin, and when the right light is on it  you can sort of see through it.  But only a little.  You can see the insides.  You know what I mean.
When he’s turning, his right arm is reasonably loose, and you can see the subtle movements from centrifugal forces or whatever, that his arm moves out and then back in again, and his hand moves with it in a way, and it’s adjusting the staff so that it stays on his shoulder instead of just flinging off into the sunset.   And if you look, the staff is making the proper bobbing for balancing, and it’s just like AJDFKSJAFJSDKAJFDA
His hair.  It moves and bounces just ever so slightly, and it’s so shiny and perfect, and I want it, and ajfDSAJFSAKJFSAJFSajfksxjvkaskreqw /dies
You can’t see it well in this, but throughout the entire movie when there was a particular closeup of Jack’s eyebrows, I was in love.  Sure, from far away they look like they’re just dark, but up close there are silvery white hairs in his eyebrows.  There are actually a lot of them, but they’re mixed in ever so slightly and it’s giving me an art boner.  I recently had to do a lot of work on hairlines and eyebrows, and you don’t really realize how important highlighting a few hairs here and there makes it so much more realistic than just a dark smear for an eyebrow.  As for why they decided to make his eyebrows dark, it’s because white eyebrows on a very pale person looks very strange and uncomfortable.  It doesn’t show up well on screen, for one, and emotions are shown much easier if the brows contrast with the skin.  The same goes for eyelashes.  Light eyelashes look unsettling, because we’re so used to seeing darker lashes break up the white of the skin and the white of the eye.  (I understand this point is moot with people who aren’t pasty white, but Jack is pasty white.)  From what I’ve seen, facial hair is commonly a little darker than head hair on white folks.  Unless you’re a weird ginger.  But getting back to his eyebrows, it’s fantastic that there’s brown and silver-white in there AND THEY HAVE INDIVIDUAL HAIRS ON HIS FACE
Also this son of a bitch has remotely realistic fingernails and I was freaking out because nails are terrifying to me.
The frost details on his hoodie reflect more light than the fabric and it’s SHINY.
And that’s why he feels real.

All those details I didn’t even notice some of them until now. THANK YOU PERSON!!! I’m gonna be looking for details when I watch these movies. It is just so cool.

[This person has said just everything I couldn’t bother to type out cause I would freak out to much about the animation and instead just yell at people to look at it. This is what I’m talking about! This animation hhnnngggg~]

    “But who will protect you?!”

Alright. Take a look at this scene for a second, because I missed this the first couple times. It’s time for another overanalyzation, shit quality gif accompaniment.

You see in the third gif? Jack says something to North right before Jamie steps up. Jack touched North’s hand, reassuring, and North shakes his head. Jack looks like he’s about to do something, and North doesn’t want him to do it. For a split second, you see Jack looked scared (maybe as he sees the kids), and then he puts on a brave face as he turns and faces Pitch.

My thought? Jack was going to give himself up to Pitch for whatever it may be worth. Jack’s the only Guardian with powers at this point, so he’s really maybe the only one worth something to Pitch. And even though it’s a long shot, Jack knows Pitch wanted to join forces.

Jack’s trying to strike a deal with himself as the bartering chip, most likely for his death.

He’s willing to do everything it takes, give up his life and his freedom (the only thing he had for 300 years) to have some sort of chance at protecting these kids, even though Pitch isn’t really all that great with keeping deals.

I think this is another point where Jack matured greatly. /shrug

((I saw this every time and every time it broke my heart. Thank you Jamie, for being so brave.))

ANIMATION BONER

AND THE SHEEN OF HIS CLOAK

GOD AS SOON AS I SAW HOW HIS CLOAK SHINED AT CERTAIN ANGLES OF LIGHT MY BREATH WAS GONE

let’s talk about how the corners of his lips were sticky from being closed for too long.

Let’s talk about the sunken and sluggish motion of his eyes as he opens and closes them. They’ve been frozen shut for a while, and he’s blinking rather quickly to try and bring moisture back into his eyes. And the slightly dark rings under his eyes indicating just how exhausted he must be, and also give the audience that little note of “HE WAS DEAD.” And also how his eyes look up at the sky as he’s going up, completely and utterly confused over what’s going on. And then how his throat and shoulders move as he takes in those first breathes after being frozen, and the way the fabric of his clothes moves as he breathes.

    HNGH.

    what they said

And guess what? This LOVELY animation is present THROUGH OUT THE ENTIRE FILM! Go see it! If it’s still in a theater near you, I strongly recommend it! Let’s break 100 mil Domestic!

((This has got to be one of the absolute most heart-breaking GIF’s this fandom has posted yet. Jack’s been on his own for the past 300 years - no friends, no family, not even any peers or role models. Then North enters his life and is like the Dad he’s been missing his entire immortal life. North not only tries to convince Jack that he’s capable of more than he believes, but is also the only Guardian to express pride in the fact that Jack’s stepped up and taken on responsibility he’s not accustomed to. For those of you who have read North’s book, I can almost guarantee that North sees a lot of his younger self in Jack, which makes this “betrayal” even more painful for him.))

FINALLY SOMEONE POSTED THIS.
NOSE-NIPPIN-FUN, I <3 YOU
This broke my heart into so many pieces. They both trusted each other so much, while Jack was initially irritated by North pressing behavior, you could see Jack actually has a large respect for him, while North even from the beginning he agreed, Yes! Jack is a guardian. Like a father looking at his child, he understand immediately why manny would choose Jack, but instead of revealing Jack’s center, he waited till Jack discovers it himself instead of telling him as this will not only help Jack mature and understand himself better, it would make Jack a stronger person. As the story progress, you could feel their chemistry become stronger and stronger.
When Jack was distracted by Pitch and everything was set up so Jack will take the dive, you could see in North’s eyes that he din’t want to believe it but yet, he could see himself doing the very same thing when he was younger. (North was a russian cossack, he left because he felt it was too cruel) In fact, this opens up a whole new idea that it was possible that North did something similar when he was younger.
Look at how Tooth turned to North and she looked back at Jack then back to North and how North just stared at Jack and soon turned his head away from him. This simple motion is so powerful in describing their character. When Jack turned, Tooth first response was to see how would North react, even she could sense how much care and love North has for Jack (in a fatherly manner, Down fangirls down). Then she turned back to Jack and finally back to North. This action I interpret it in this way, Tooth was sad and disappointed since Jack betrayed them and Baby Tooth was missing, though she wished it was not true but circumstances, it was hard not to believe. She turned to North, hoping maybe, just maybe North would doubt that Jack would betray them and actually try to clear everything, so she could hang onto him for judgement. It was obvious here Tooth looked up to North as a leader and not only a friend or a fellow guardian.

This scene (among the rest of the movie’s scenes) just gave me chills and broke my heart. The way Jack’s chest is heaving, he’s trying not to cry because he knows he did something terribly wrong and he let down not only Bunny and Tooth but North, someone who really believed in him.
Jack realizes how selfish he has been and now regrets so many things and he knows no words and express how deeply sorry he is nor can it fix it.
The way he turns to North hoping for some encouraging words but knowing he doesn’t deserve them,
The way North looks away and Jack just feels he doesn’t deserve to be there any longer, drops the little wooden baby and flies off.
North sees himself in Jack from when he was younger. He knows Jack is capable of so much.
This scene just speaks a thousand words and more. I just can’t stop looking at Jack’s expression and how he so badly wants to say something, anything. Just, how his brow furrows and he turns to North, his mouth opens for a moment but then closes as he turns.
I can’t….This whole movie was amazing and I hope it stays as JUST this movie. No sequels. No TV series. More books, alright but just, keep the movie as it is. It is so perfect.

I JUST REALIZED THAT SANDY BOWS TO JACK

    And no not in the “I recognize you as leader” sort of bow. It’s a gesture that a lot of Buddhists (and Hindus too if I remember correctly) seem to use when greeting a friend. It’s a respectful and peaceful bow and just ajskldjfjlk;

I just love little things like that because it shows the depth of how far the creators and animators went with developing each of these characters. I mean Sandy WOULD be the kind of guy to use a bow such as that, being the most naturally peaceful natured of the bunch.

Oh my gods. HE BOWS. And do you notice Bunnymund? He gives Jack and smile and a nod of his head. A nod as if he’s proud. A gesture to recognize Jack as a friend. HE NODDED AND SMILED. That’s it. This movie killed me. I’m happy now.

OMG THIS GIF…You can actually feel the lump rise in poor Jack’s throat here. His shoulders arch forward. His body makes a physical lurch back as the feeling sinks in. His eyes squint and well with tears, quite possibly with the heaviest load of melancholy that he has ever experienced.
Jack is physically and emotionally beaten down here. He is crying and sitting silently in an icy barren trench, literally at the bottom of the world, more alone than ever before over the course of the last 300 years.
He has lost all hope. He has given up.
He takes this deep breath and slumps back over himself and finally gives up.These are real human emotions. Some have quite possibly experienced this precise moment at some point in their lives. I know I have.DreamWorks. You are amazing. This is where the animation department really kicked ass in this movie, (though obviously all of it was awesome). The emotions of all the characters and their body languages and reactions to other characters or their environments is stunning.

There are so many points in this movie where Jack should of cried  but held it in. It makes me think that he’s probably done a lot of crying and has just gotten good at keeping the tears at bay.
And now I’m sad. T_T

Jack, enraged, can’t believe what he’s seeing. Pitch lifts the staff, and breaks it over his knee, cracking it in two. Light explodes from the staff and terror comes into Jack’s eyes, clutching his chest as if in pain.

[I want to know how Jack is -magically- connected to his staff. It looked like it broke him when Pitch split his staff in two]

God, look at Jack’s face in the 2nd screenshot—he totally was not expecting Pitch to go back on his word. Because of this I do think Jack is innocent in some respects, and I think he has a child’s capacity to trust and forgive. Any of the other Guardians wouldn’t have been surprised at Pitch’s actions here, I don’t think. Poor Jack, he needs a break. :-[

((In regards to his connection to the staff, I too am confused every time I watch him hunch over in pain. While that aspect remains an enigma to me, I’ve discovered at least one way his staff is an invaluable tool to him - he’s incapable of flying without it. The first time he and the Guardians fight Pitch over Burgess, he loses his grip on the staff and is sent falling and flailing through the air, and after it’s broken, he’s trapped in that fissure until he fixes his weapon.

If nothing else, the staff is a conduit through which Jack is able to communicate with and control the wind, as well as focus his somewhat volatile powers (as evidenced by the random snow and frost that shows up when he’s upset). He’s still capable of frosting items and creating snowflakes with his own hands, but his staff is truly an extension of himself.

As for Jack’s reaction, I’m glad someone pointed out his childlike innocence, because I completely agree. Though he’s gained a great deal of street smarts and an understanding of human interactions by traveling and people-watching for 300 years, he lacks experience in interacting with others. He’s probably never really been lied to up until this point, and if you’ve gone a few centuries without having dealt with a blow to your trust like that, it could easily blindside you.

This inexperience with people is also why why I disagree with some other fans abut him being a seasoned flirt with a natural knack for acting dominant in a relationship. Certainly, I believe Jack can grow to that point in some pairings (like Bennefrost), but I don’t believe he’d be an initiator of intimacy until he had time to acclimate to interacting with people directly.))
